The method
How it works
- 01Each month the withdrawal is taken first, then the remaining balance grows at the monthly equivalent of the yearly return you choose.
- 02If withdrawals are larger than what the balance earns, the investment shrinks over time and can run out.
- 03The final value is what remains at the end of the period.
Questions
Asked often
How much can I withdraw every month?
Withdraw less than the investment earns and the capital can last; withdraw more and it gets used up. Try different amounts to find a level your investment can sustain.
How is an SWP taxed?
Each withdrawal is a redemption of units, so only the gain within it is taxed, as capital gains. Tax rules change, so check them for your own situation.
Which funds are used for an SWP?
Usually hybrid or debt funds, for steadier values. The right choice depends on how long the income is needed and how much variation you can accept.
