The method

How it works

  1. 01FIRE number = yearly expenses not covered by other income ÷ the safe withdrawal rate. At 4%, that is 25 times those expenses.
  2. 02The target rises with inflation every year, because your expenses will.
  3. 03Your savings and monthly investments grow at the assumed return until they reach the target.

Questions

Asked often

What is a safe withdrawal rate?

It is the share of the portfolio you take out each year. The 4% figure comes from US studies; some planners use a lower rate, such as 3–3.5%, to allow for higher inflation in India and a longer retirement.

Does FIRE mean I stop working?

Not necessarily. For many people it means work becomes a choice rather than a need.

What if I have rental or other income?

Enter it as other income. Only the expenses it does not cover need to come from your portfolio, which lowers your FIRE number.
