The method
How it works
- 01The monthly SIP stays the same for twelve months, then rises by the step-up percentage, every year.
- 02Each instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at the monthly equivalent of the yearly return.
- 03Set the step-up to 0% to see the same SIP without increases, for comparison.
Questions
Asked often
How much should I step up my SIP each year?
Many investors match their expected pay rise, often 5–10% a year. Even a small yearly increase can make a large difference over long periods.
Can the step-up happen automatically?
Many fund houses offer a top-up option when the SIP is registered, raising it by a fixed amount or percentage each year.
Is a step-up the same as starting a new SIP?
The effect is similar, but an automatic step-up keeps everything in one SIP and happens without you having to remember.
